Short stairwells can sometimes call for a variation in training. Instead of the dog taking one step at a time, they are instructed to stay at the top of the short flight while their handler makes their way down. Once the handler has successfully walked down, they then call the dog into heel. In this video, the handler needed to move up a step for the dog to have room to get back into heel, which he does at the end. #VetDogsTrainingTuesday #TrainingTuesday
We were happy to support Naylor Association Solutions (@NaylorLLC) this weekend at the @ASAEannual convention for their 50th Anniversary! Black Labrador, Frieda, got to greet hundreds of visitors, and many stopped for a photo 😀 Naylor will donate $5 for each photo that is shared of Frieda, tags (@naylorllc, and uses the hashtags, #asae19, and #americasvetdogs. Don't forget to share your pics if you got to meet her!

“Nothing will work unless you do.” – Maya Angelou We know #Mondays can be hard, but we hope this clip of Spencer provides some #MondayMotivation! Spencer has been working for close to two years to become a #servicedog for a veteran or first responder in need. In the video, he is practicing tugging open interior doors with a strap that his instructor has attached to the door. First he has to tug open the door, then he holds the strap, and finally he releases it for his handler when prompted. Visit VetDogs.org for more info on our programs today 🐾
Today is #NationalNonprofitDay! America's VetDogs couldn't be prouder to be a New York based nonprofit organization that serves the entire country. In 2013, America's VetDogs became the second assistance dog school in the United States to be accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International; our sister organization, the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, was the first. Consider helping us continue our mission to provide service dogs free of charge to our veterans and first responders by making a contribution at Donate.VetDogs.org today.
Black Labrador service dog in training, Emma, hopes you're having a great Friday! Do you have a black Labrador at home? We'd love to see your photos of them! Share them with us today 😄
Happy Friday! VetDogs was happy to recently receive a generous donation of 100 @Hurtta.America "Free Hand Leashes" for our service dog handlers! Our Service Dog Program Manager, Valerie, tells us, "The palm handle design fits snugly across the palm of the hand allowing the handlers to still grip the wheel of their chairs to propel themselves forward & at the same time keep the dog a safe distance from the wheels. Genius design!” The photo shows one of our recent graduates looking down at his yellow Labrador service dog, who is looking back up at him while standing alongside his wheelchair. The man is using one of the leashes.
Today has been a beautiful day on #LongIsland 😎! Our instructors utilize as many parts of our campus as possible when training their string of dogs. The video shows #servicedogInstructor, Jen, working in wheelchair with black Labrador, Siler. The two gracefully maneuver their way down the sidewalk, and around a semi-circle in front of our National Administrative Center.
Spencer is practicing phone retrieval with his instructor, Kim, today! The video shows Spencer running to grab the phone off the table, and then bringing it to Kim who is across the room in an electric wheelchair. Visit VetDogs.org for more info on our NY based nonprofit today 🐾
America's VetDogs and the @GuideDogFoundation were happy to have members from the @RoyalCaninUS sales team visit today to learn more about our missions, and to educate our Canine Care staff about pet food nutrition. The group also generously donated products towards our programs, including food and supplies from @Eukanuba! Thank you, Royal Canin 😃🐾
@WBALtvpuppy, Camden, is currently working with her trainer, Kim, on the cue, "Brace". Check out this morning's #CamdenWednesday pupdate to see her progress! Brace can be helpful for a veteran who needs help getting in and out of chairs. We teach our dogs to square their shoulders, and standing firmly so that the handler can use their assistance. #TODAYPuppySquad
We are extremely excited to announce that VetDogs graduate, and Command Sergeant Major, Ret., Gretchen Evans, is competing in the "World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji"! A few of our puppy raisers & graduates were happy to attend the Wounded Warrior Project (@wwp) Walter Reed softball game yesterday 😃 Scroll through the pics to see some of the moments from the day, they couldn't have gotten better weather! A huge thank you to WWP Outreach Specialist, David, for helping us get involved in this fun event that was held at Prince George's Stadium. Thank you as well to GDF volunteer puppy raiser, Holly, for capturing these cheerful images.
