Recently a friend I’m still getting to know let me in on her childhood. She reminisced on the ways her mom embodied grace and always made sure she knew just how loved she is. She said if she or one of her siblings broke a dish, for example, the first words out of her mom’s mouth were always, “I love you more than that dish!” She fully believed this cultivated her confidence and helped eliminate shame. (So beautiful, right?!) Our conversation has been on repeat in my mind for over a week now. So today, when Goof lost his brand spankin’ new pair of glasses (after having them in hand for less than 24 hours!) I wanted to freak out. My initial reaction wasn’t awful, but it certainly wasn’t, “I love you more than those glasses.” Shortly after the incident, he and I were together without the younger boys and I said, “I want you to know I love you more than those glasses. You know that, don’t you?” He shrugged his shoulders and my heart broke. We had a good conversation and I tried to eliminate shame, which was evident by the way he was responding. Parenting is incredibly sanctifying work. I’m pretty sure nothing else I’ve ever done has taught me more about Jesus. Nothing else has forced me to face the ugliness within my soul on a daily basis. While it exhausts me, I know it’s the best thing for me. For grace when we lose our glasses and grace when we react poorly to the small things, I’m giving thanks.
