Learning to do a pull up has been the hardest but most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. It takes so much more strength than I ever anticipated it would but working on a single goal for so long and finally getting it is one of the best feelings in the world! ⠀ Here are a bunch of exercises I do to work on my pull up strength, and I do them in this order too: ⠀ 1️⃣ Negative Chin Ups - 4 sets to failure • the jump up at the start is optional, climb up on a box and hang then let yourself down slowly if you’re new to this. ⠀ 2️⃣ + 3️⃣ Wide Grip Lat Pull Down superset with Close Chin Grip Pull Down. 6 of each x 4 sets. • As heavy as you possibly can manage! ⠀ 4️⃣ Wide Grip Rows - 10 reps x 3 sets. • Heavy again. Dig deep 💪🏼 ⠀ 5️⃣ + 6️⃣ Underhand Cable Row superset with Behind Head Rope Pulls. 10 of each x 3 sets. ⠀ 7️⃣ Bicep Curl to Hammer Curl - 12 reps total x 3 reps. • As heavy as possible. ⠀ When it comes to building strength, you HAVE to challenge yourself with the weights you pick. Your muscles won’t get stronger unless you force them to move heavier things. Of all the arm balances there are, peacock pose is the one I find hardest. I love to find excuses as to why things are hard for me (😏 don’t we all) so yet again I’m going to blame my length on why it’s never been an easy one for me and bypass the fact it’s probably more just a lack of understanding of the skill involved... ⠀ Anyway I digress, this weeks #YogiSeeYogiDo was chosen by @natashaswinter who did a gorgeous job of copying the pose she saw from @fitqueenirene 😍 And can I just say that this takes SO much more back strength than I thought it would. I found myself in unfamiliar territory last night and am still trying to process how I feel about it. There I am, sat at a beach restaurant, in a very quiet corner of Thailand, a good 6000ish miles from home - it’s off season here so everywhere is pretty deserted (which is just the way I like it 😂) ⠀ Over on my right, a guy and a girl have started practicing handstands on the beach - and they’re pretty decent! And there is this huge pull inside me that wants to go over and play too. There are few things I love more than handstands and they looked like nice people. But I couldn’t make myself do it. Couldn’t make myself be brave enough to wander over to strangers and join in on the fun. ⠀ At almost exactly the same time, a guy sat behind me at the next table is having a conversation with a friend - I was far from eavesdropping but I heard the phrase ‘where I grew up in Melton Mowbray...’ - which is the pretty small market town where I grew up and my family still live. The guy looked about my age, and I have 4 siblings so the likelihood of him knowing someone from my family was pretty huge. I wanted to politely interrupt, point out the crazy coincidence and have what I’m sure would’ve been an interesting conversation - but I couldn’t. I couldn’t make myself be brave enough to speak to a stranger. ⠀ And I regret both of them. The time came and went - the people stopped handstanding and the guy carried on his conversation with his friend pass the point of interjection - and I missed that opportunity of connection. And it bugged me. Why didn’t I go over? Why didn’t I say something? Connecting with people over a common ground is almost always a positive experience, so why does it feel so hard? So scary? And I guess that’s why I love this online platform - here I can make those connections without the fear. And if I think about it, it’s a fear of rejection. That the handstanders wouldn’t want to handstand with me. I have this thing with sand. I kinda hate it yet I love the beach. I freak out at the thought of having sand on my skin (don’t even get me started on getting it in the bedsheets 😳🤯) yet sitting on a beach is one of my favourite places to be. It makes no sense I’m fully aware 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ ⠀ But today I decided to go do some yoga on the beach as the sun went down because it was too beautiful not to (stories for photos). And inevitably sand started to get everywhere - I would be sweeping it away every few moments to begin with but bit by bit I started to care less and less and eventually decided the mat was quite pointless so threw it aside and pretty much rolled around in the sand 😂 I’m not quite sure the moral or message behind this story (does every story HAVE to have one on Instagram?!) but I felt like it was some sort of internal victory for me which I wanted to share. Superset with... ⠀ 🔺 Sissy Squat - body weight. 15 reps for 4 sets. ⠀ 🔺 Goblet Squat - heels elevated to target quads. 17.5kg. 15 reps for 4 sets. ⠀ 🔺 Walking Lunges - 20 steps total. 16kg each hand. 4 sets. Superset with... 🔺 Sled Push - two track lengths.
