Today's installment of Camo History is the South African Army experimental Giraffe Camo. This camouflage was a experimental/prototype uniform issued to the Pathfinders of the 1st Parachute Battalion or Parabats. From photographs and testimonies it seems that it was only used by the Pathfinders between 1980 and 1982. Not much else is know about this pattern other than that it was apparently very effective in one or two particular environments and not very effective anywhere else. The fact that it was experimental and that it wasn't actually adopted by the SA Army, means that it's one of if not the rarest African camouflages out there.
