Police were harassing the Stonewall Inn (a NYC gay bar) for it’s “unsavory” activities. It had been turned into a gay bar by the mafia, but it’s owners weren’t the subject of the NYPD’s frequent raids...their patrons were. Finally when police came to raid it again, the patrons had enough. The #StonewallRiots started when Black transwoman #MarshaPJohnson threw a brick at police and Hispanic transwoman #SylviaRivera threw a bottle at police. @lgballiance never forget that. #transawarenessweek #TransIsBeautiful #TransAlly #WeWontBeErased

jomcitrus. this quote is from Stormé DeLarverie the night of the stonewall rebell

this quote is from Stormé DeLarverie the night of the stonewall rebellion june 28, 1969. Stormé (a multiracial Black butch lesbian & survivor of much anti-Black & queerantagonistic violence throughout her life) served as an armed patrol protecting her “baby girls” (my heart!!) from any “ugliness” and was also the MC for the jewel box revue, the first racially integrated drag revue in the us. when cops raided the bar that night, as they often did, four cops dragged Stormé out of the bar, handcuffed her, & hit her in the head with a nightstick. as they shoved her into a cop car she shouted to bystanders WHY DON’T YOU GUYS DO SOMETHING?? and the crowd began throwing bottles & pennies & shit at the cops. the rebellion began. i think about this moment a lot. injustice & state violence demand action... immediate & armed action 063/100 #jom100 #100thingstosay #the100dayproject #the100dayproject2019 #handlettering #doodlesofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #sketchbook #artjournal #100dayproject #100dayproject2019 #queerart #queerartist #nonbinaryart #nonbinaryartist #disabledart #disabledartist #lesbianart #lesbianartist #transartist #butchlesbian #dragking #gaypride #stonewallrebellion #stonewallriots #stormedelarverie

On a hot June night in 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar in New York City, as they had many times before. But this time was different. As the legend goes, Marsha P. Johnson, a trans woman, hurled a shot glass into a mirror at the bar, kicking off the Stonewall Rebellion. This week is Transgender Awareness Week, a celebration of trans people and a time to raise awareness about the struggles they face. Go to the link in our bio to learn more about Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, another trans icon whose legacy is still felt today. #MarshaPJohnson #SylviaRivera #StonewallInn #StonewallRiots #StonewallRebellion #BlackTransLivesMatter #BLM #TransRights #Pride #LGBTQ #LGBTQLivesMatter #BlackLivesMatter #TransWeek #TransAwarenessWeek #TDOR #TransDayOfRemembrance #NYC #Stonewall #InsideEdition

{ Day 13 - June 28th } Some people might not know what June 28th means. It's the day that the Stonewall riots happened, early in the morning. It's one of the major movements on how the LGBTQ+ groups began getting a bit more coverage. It was a big thing, and a fight I think that will go down in history. I felt like making her sweet and cute would have been the wrong way to go, so I gave her a rather grunge look. What do you think? The birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. No trip to NYC would be complete without a pilgrimage of sorts to The Stonewall Inn. It’s simply amazing that it’s still open for business, so I was able to grab a drink right where it all began four decades ago! #nyc #stonewall #lgbt
