New York Activism Part 1: writers combatting #fascism and #TransLiberation. The trans man with the raised fist is a Marxist (who’s name I forgot) speaking at #SylviaRivera ’s funeral.

a piece i did of sylvia rivera and marsha p johnson, two iconic trans women known for their lgbt+ activism during the late 60’s until their deaths. transgender people, and trans women in particular, have been targets of discrimination for decades. but, their revolution started with these two women. in the background i glued down pictures of trans women who have died due to the amount of prejudice towards trans people today, along with newspaper clippings and scary statistics about how life is life for a trans person. if you look closely, hopefully you can see how the string connects racism to sexism to transphobia as well. i tried my best to have marsha and sylvia’s portraits highlight their beauty in an empowering way. although they, along with the trans community, have endured far too much hate and prejudice, i think it’s important to showcase the strength, bravery, and power in their femininity. i hope i paid homage to them and their legacy with this piece. - #marshapjohnson #sylviarivera #art #activistart #collage #portrait #prismacolor #gouache #transrights

#LGBTQIA #icons #sylviarivera and #marthapjohnson . Thanks to their work and the #stonewall riots there has been an increase in anti discrimination protections, but unfortunately those protections for #LGBTQIA people are under attack #lgbthistory #LGBT #gay #gayrights #stonewallriots #travel #traveler #viajero #voyageur #explore #globetrotter #vacaciones #vacances #queer #queerhistory #trans

🏳️‍🌈 Super late post on #WorldPrideNYC #TransDayofAction #DykeMarch cos life and laziness. But after all, everyday can be pride—an opportunity to express ourselves, fight for each other, live authentic lives, love courageously and even to celebrate our existence by partying. And in this case here, adding positive queer content to the internets. 🏳️‍🌈 The Stonewall Riots resonate with me today in that we need to constantly lift each other up and a reminder that those of us with the most privileges bear the most responsibilities. I thank Marsha, Sylvia, Stormé and all others who sacrificed so much and fought so hard so that I can live today as a queer non-binary person. I can only hope that in my lifetime, I’d have a drop of contribution in continuing the legacy they’ve created.

In December 1970, Liza Cowan [*SEE @lgbt_history COMMENT BELOW*] of WBAI sat down with members of the newly formed #StreetTransvestiteActionRevolutionaries (S.T.A.R.) for an interview. Years later, Cowan donated the reel-to-reel recording of the interview to the @lesbianherstoryarchives . Brian Ferree, a researcher at the Lesbian Herstory Archives, found the tape “Interview with Members of S.T.A.R.” in the basement at the archives. Now digitized, the recording is likely the earliest recorded interview with #SylviaRivera and #MarshaPJohnson, as well as possibly the only recorded interview with members of S.T.A.R., during the organization’s short existence. The tape opens with Rivera and Johnson describing their coming out process. Here's Marsha's: "As I was growing up, I met a lot of men. They never appealed to me, you know, too much sexually. You know, I tried to keep away from them because in my hometown if you were homosexual you were out of it and they would call you all kinds of names. And then when I first came to New York, I was 17 years old that’s when I started getting kind of— you know— transvestite, more like a transvestite. I started out with makeup in 1963-1964 and in 1965 I was coming out more and I was still wearing makeup. But I was still going to jail just for wearing makeup. In 1969, I started wearing female attire full time." • [credit: Rachel Corbman, Andrew W. Mellon Predoctoral Fellow in Women’s History, Center for Women’s History]

Thank you to everyone that came out to support all the artists in @throughtheflowerartspace pop-up exhibition and to Judy Chicago for inviting me to show work. Here are some installation images of my work installed in an old solitary confinement cell. Queer activists from these historic photographs were removed, leaving only ghostly figures and repetition of imagery. In the confinement cell the viewer was surrounded by activist signs with disembodied audio playing over a speaker from activist Sylvia Rivera's "Yall better quiet down" speech at New York City's Christopher Street Liberation Day Rally in 1973. #ApoloGomez #QueerErasure #QueerActivism #Activists #LBGTQRights #TTFArtSpace #JudyChicago #SylviaRivera #ChristopherStreet #Stonewall #Stonewall50th #QueerArt #Installationart #stonewallriots
