✨Gay Liberation by George Segal✨ •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• These statues may look VERY FAMILIAR to my fellow Stanford affiliated folx!! Every other day for about three years, I would wiz by a set a white statues in the #mainquad. The statues had no plaque and I always wanted to know more about them, but I could never get a clear answer on who they were or who created them. Fast forward to the other day when I came face-to-face with the same statues - this time in the middle of NYC!!! •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Across from the #StoneWallInn in, four sculptures live permanently in conversation. "Gay Liberation" by George Segal exists in two castings in New York and at Stanford. It depicts two same-sex couples relaxing in a park, their forms rendered in provocatively immaculate white-painted cast metal. The work commemorates the 1969 Stonewall rebellion that is often cited as the beginning of the modern gay rights movement. Such images “help to create queer culture by creating a social space for queerness, rather than just representing it after the fact,” argues Stanford art history Professor Richard Meyer. They demonstrate in a uniquely clear manner the interdependence of all art with its social context, and thus are vital to understanding the visual art of our time. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Have you ever seen these statues in Christopher Park? • • • • #nycpride #WestVillage #TheVillage #GreenwichVillage #gayliberation #gayrights #MarshaPJohnson #SylviaRivera #translivesmatter #queerhistory #lgbtqhistory #contemporaryart #plans #nyc #streetart #instaart #modernart #arte #contemporary #abstract #artcollector #contemporaryartist #nycprimeshot #what_i_saw_in_nyc #ig_nycity #ig_great_shots_nyc #icapture_nyc #unlimitednewyork

This week’s #Queerspiration is Sylvia Rivera! Not only was Sylvia one of the first Latinx-American drag queen and transgender activists, she was also one of the original participants in the Stonewall Riots. She was a founding member of both the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance. With her close friend, Marsha P. Johnson, Rivera co-founded the “Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries,” a group dedicated to helping homeless young drag queens and trans women of color. (Photo: Valerie Shaff) #Activist #Trans #TransRights #TransRememberance #Stonewall #Latinx #TransDayofRememberance #TransPower #TransIsBeautiful #TransIsPowerful #SylviaRivera #transwomenofcolor #lgbtrights #Resist #lgbtq #lgbtqi2s

Police were harassing the Stonewall Inn (a NYC gay bar) for it’s “unsavory” activities. It had been turned into a gay bar by the mafia, but it’s owners weren’t the subject of the NYPD’s frequent raids...their patrons were. Finally when police came to raid it again, the patrons had enough. The #StonewallRiots started when Black transwoman #MarshaPJohnson threw a brick at police and Hispanic transwoman #SylviaRivera threw a bottle at police. @lgballiance never forget that. #transawarenessweek #TransIsBeautiful #TransAlly #WeWontBeErased

On a hot June night in 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a well-known gay bar in New York City, as they had many times before. But this time was different. As the legend goes, Marsha P. Johnson, a trans woman, hurled a shot glass into a mirror at the bar, kicking off the Stonewall Rebellion. This week is Transgender Awareness Week, a celebration of trans people and a time to raise awareness about the struggles they face. Marsha P Johnson was an American gay liberation activist and drag queen. She said the P in her name stood for "pay it no mind" when referencing her gender. She led the fight for transgender rights alongside Sylvia Rivera, a transgendered activist. Marsha was a prominent figure in the Stonewall uprising, founding member of the Gay Liberation Front, and co-founded the gay and transvestite advocacy organization- S.T.A.R. . "Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Ray Rivera planted the seeds that took so long to grow and take root. They were there in the front lines" - Agosto Machado (artist and activist) . In those days, lesbian and the gay folks never included transgender people. Marsha and Sylvia fought for their human rights in a world that didn't accept their existence. Their strength led to the movement that still continues to grow today . Digital illustration: @trashbouquet 💐 . #transgenderrights #transrights #gaypride #marshapjohnson #pride #sylviarivera

#TransFreedomMarch2019Torino 📆Domenica 17 Novembre ⌚️ore 16.00 📌piazza Vittorio Veneto

GET UP AND #GO: Six days from now we will gather to celebrate the 45 artists of #UNDER100, V.19. But 15 #SALES (!) into our show, it’s very clear that you may want to visit our show even sooner if you’re looking for a wonderful acquisition for yourself — or starting in early (for once?) on #holidayshopping. There could be no better #ambassador to kick off our posts for the year-end juried show than #KimberleeTraub (@kimberleetraub), whose bountiful imagination is all about the stuff of motivation. She tells us, “My favorite subjects range from flowing dancer #muses to #magical #Goddess #icons designed to #inspirewomen to see their own #creativepower.” Most recently sighted in our #BRICKBYBRICK #Stonewall50 summer show, where she took down the #SYLVIARIVERA AWARD (talk about your movers and shakers!), Kim has been part of our community since being discovered in the late 90s by none other than #MaryLiz, our founding director. We are thrilled to showcase her talents again and we can’t wait to see Kim and many of her colleagues — and you! — at our #OpeningReception next Sunday, November 17, 4 to 7 PM.
