A land without vultures spells anarchy- and we may lose these birds in 100 years. . When vultures virtually disappeared from India after mass-poisoning by dicloflenac, a cheap pain-killer for cattle, the results were disastrous. When cows died, and there were no vultures to eat them, dogs were introduced to eat the carcasses instead. Dog and rat populations subsequently went out of control, diseases spread, dog bites went up, and especially in dense populations as you would find in India, many people died from rabies. The epidemic cost the country a bucket load to fund treatments of those who survived, and the labour force took a critical hit. Moreover, vultures became critically endangered in a flash- their numbers fell by 99.7% in less than 10 years and now exist in tiny numbers. The balance, environmentally and economically, was thrown into shambles. . In Africa, white-backed, lappet-faced, Ruppell’s and the hooded, as pictured here, are part of the most threatened bird group in the world. The cinerous vulture is already extinct, the egyptian and bearded vulture are threatened. If it weren’t for them, the savannah would be ridden with all sorts of bacteria and disease. However, we might lose them all in under 100 years. . About 2/3 of deaths of vultures in Africa are by poisoning by pastoralists protecting their livestock and poachers wishing to cover their tracks. They use a cheap, nasty and very accessible version of the Furadan pesticide. About 1/3 are killed for traditional medicine. . Addressing human-wildlife conflict and the effects drugs have on wildlife is never an easy task, but the lack of proper management plans to protect these birds will mean the end of vultures within the next century. It’s not a place we’d want, as the world simply cannot function properly without them- and anarchy will ensue. . 📌Hooded vulture in flight during the sunset, South Africa. 🔍Necrosyrtes monachus 📎IUCN Classification: Critically Endangered

Are these not a pair of the most beautiful wallaroos (macropus robustus) you have ever seen? This pair of mother and joey were grazing at the side of the road when we came upon them, complete with their longer beautiful winter coats. Because it is in the valley in winter, the sun was already at a low angle and their longer fur made them glow. Wallaroos like all members of the macropod family which include kangaroos and wallabies are able to successfully live in these harsh conditions because they have the ability to essentially pause the gestation of a joey before it is born until such time the environment can support it. Unlike the usual livestock, they thus are able to live in harmony with the environment, and still be prolific in good times. Essentially, a macropod can have a joey out of pouch, a joey in pouch and one waiting to be born and still be able to overgraze their environment. Now, if only all other wildlife and humans could do the same, imagine much more efficient can we all use our environment without destroying it . . . . . . #savetheplanet #environment #wildlife #planetearth #australia #extinction #endangeredspecies #noplanetb #whatweliked #kangaroo #beautyofnature #exploringtheglobe #vision #travelphotography #travelgram #nature_perfection #mothernature #nature_shooters #nature_seekers #naturephotography #naturelovers .. #yourshotphotographer #bestnatureshots #passionpassport #natureporn #naturehippys #allnatureshots #earthcapture #wallaroo #theglobewanderer

I found you on a trail I’d passed over

A dream from this day last year I found you on a trail I’d passed over Because I didn’t have it in me to find you then But in truth, that is where we met in spirit and in life They are one in the same And so we have forever To greet one another, Learn each other, To say goodbye

First flight and first photo with the #MavicAir drone! I wouldn’t really call it a flight, more like getting a high vantage point and then coming back down. I didn’t want to fly it off a cliff on the first try. 📷 . #travel_captures #travelwithme #traveljunkie #travelporn #travellove #moodynature_elite #moody_nature #folknature #folkscenary #naturegramy #wildvisuals #createscenery #folkscenery #createxplore #folkgreen #allnatureshots #artofvisuals #awesomeearth #earth_deluxe #earthfocus #earthofficial #visualscollective #visualoflife #landscapehunters #virginia #mountains #drone
