Welp, winter is officially here! Which is usually when everyone starts getting busy with all the holiday to-do’s, letting go with their diets and naturally becoming more sedentary as it’s just too cold to go for that run or doing the usual yard work. Interestingly enough your day to day activity adds up huge in regards to burning calories. More so at times than that 20 min workout. Think about it, anyone can workout hard for 30m in the local gym class and burn some awesome calories, but if they go home in sit in front of the couch or a desk the other 12 waking hours of the day you could see how even if they were watching their food intake overall calorie exertion could make the difference in whether you were losing weight, maintaining or gaining. But just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you can’t stay active! Here’s a few simple ideas to start getting your steps up for the day in a bit of a different way and maybe have some fun: •Take the kiddos to the local ice or roller skating rink. •Instead of walking in the cold, take a long couple strolls in your local mall. Maybe get some shopping done while you’re at it! •Make use of the time stuck indoors by cleaning out your closets and pantries. •Park a little further than necessary. •Take the stairs whenever possible. •Try our some active TV Viewing. Implement some body weight exercises as you watch your fave show. •Create a mini home gym under your bed you can pull out whenever needed. A couple dumbells and bands won’t cost you much at all but could really come in handy when you can’t get out to your local gym class. There are legit so many ways to stay active without much effort at all when it’s cold out. Don’t let the winter months derail you from your goals. Diet is a great place to start! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Kids and babies who are eating need to have plenty of fiber-filled food options AND plenty of fluid. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Here's a short list of high-fiber foods:⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 🍐high-fiber fruits: blueberries, cherries, plums, pears, apricots, dried fruits (chopped small to prevent choking in small children)⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Green leafy veggies⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 🍎Juice: prune juice, pear nectar, apple juice, apricot nectar⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ 🌯 Beans and lentils⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Whole grains such as oatmeal⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ In addition to foods, always include the pediatrician. When kids are constipated, the colon stretches and it takes time to resolve. Fluid and fiber alone may not be able to fix chronic constipation. That's why many pediatricians prescribe medications. Resolving a chronic constipation issue can take 6 months or more.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ What about probiotics? I was unable to find good evidence for using probiotics to resolve constipation. Until more information emerges, I don't feel comfortable commenting on the connection between the two.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ But what about the child who doesn't eat any of the foods on this plate? Picky eating is a common cause of constipation. I can’t tell you how many of my clients come to me with fears of socializing while changing eating habits. They don’t want to “go off plan” or gain weight from their night of indulgences. Mostly, they just don’t want to feel the torturous guilt after. The right eating pattern will have you feeling excited, and armed with knowledge and power going into any social event. The right plan will have you excited for the things you love, not fearing them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are my tips for minimizing fears of holiday parties and social events: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1. Engage in every single part of the event, not just the food. Experience the people, the activities and the environment. Access your inner social butterfly and make the event about the event, not about the food. In focusing on dieting, as forget how to live. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2. No matter what you eat, immediately acknowledge it, appreciate it, and move on. “That was so delicious!” When you start to hear yourself becoming guilty, acknowledge the thought and move past it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3. To optimizing mindful eating, make one plate of food and stick with it. This way, you can visually see what you’re eating and be able to savor and enjoy it more. Try to effortfully slow down eating by putting your fork down between bites or eating with your non-dominant hand. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4. Turn your fear into excitement and recite this to yourself before the gathering “I can’t wait to enjoy this experience.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 5. Know that no matter what you eat, you will live to tell the tale.
