Getting very excited about "Modern Artifacts," our upcoming book (due out next spring) featuring all 18 installments of the eponymous series we presented with the MoMA Archives in ESOPUS. The book will open with an introduction by MoMA's Chief of Archives, Library and Research Collections @michelleelligott; it will also include six brand-new artists' projects inspired by an aspect of the archive from @mecstudios and @rheak (pictured here next to Michelle) as well as @clifford_vo, @michaelrakowitz, @marymlum, and @paulramirezjonas. And, in case you're wondering, those ties on the table of the archives reading room were hand made by #Picasso for museum director #alfredbarr.... . . . . . #moma @themuseumofmodernart #momaarchives #archives #modernartifacts #artistproject @artbook #esopusarchive #cliffordowens #michelleelligott #maryellencarroll #marylum #rheakaram #michaelrakowitz #paulramirezjonas #museumarchives #contemporaryart #modernart #artbook

In 2013, I asked Joyce Pensato (who had contributed a brilliant project to ESOPUS 19) if she might consider doing a small edition as a fundraiser for the Esopus Foundation. She thought about it for a while and said, "Why don't I just do five drawings?" And that's exactly what she did (she's putting the finishing touches on one of five "Batmans" she created from scratch for us in this photo). Her efforts essentially paid for a good portion of the next issue of ESOPUS. Joyce, who passed away just a few days ago, was one of the most generous, joyous, irreverent, and talented people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I am deeply saddened by her untimely death—and I feel like the contemporary art world has lost some ballast which it desperately needs. . . . . . #joycepensato @joycepensato @elizabethferry #contemporarypainter #contemporarypainting #contemporaryart #batman #homersimpson #expressionism #painterspainters @petzelgallery #esopusarchive #fuckcancer

In 1969, the American military in Vietnam assembled a group of 11 solders and 1 female civilian employee to stage a production of “The Fantasticks” that traveled throughout the war zone for over a year. In ESOPUS 12, we published “Off-Off-Off Broadway,” which featured recollections by a number of these veterans along with their photographs of the experience. In the piece, one of the soldiers, Rick Holen, shared this memory from a particular performance: "We played at Freedom Hill, which was a Marine Corps base near the DMZ. It was, as I remember, a large tent that was part chow hall/ boxing ring, just packed with hardcore jarhead Marines. We had stage lights, so they turned off the regular lights. Halfway through the show, about 12 troops came in with their steel helmets and weapons. They had just come off a patrol. In the low light, it looked like they had dark mud all over their uniforms. As the two lovers started to sing "Soon Its Going to Rain," I noticed that two or three of the troops right down in front—just a few feet away from the edge of the stage—suddenly had tears running down their face. At the end of the show the house lights were turned on and I could see that it wasn't mud on their uniforms, it was blood—a lot of it. They had just been in a firefight and had lost many of their brothers.” . . . . . #memorialday #war #thefantasticks #musicaltheater #theater #esopusarchive #artheals #artandwar @rick.holen @jncremodeling #vietnam

It is what he considers to be his first successful attempt at creating a drawing from memory since the brain injury he suffered after being attacked in 2000. When he started working on it, he told me in an email: “I’m working on a very difficult drawing for ‘the cause’, which is a very welcome challenge for me; and it further forces me to test my limits of recovery and be better than I ever was at illustrating a picture from my mind and putting it on paper.” Mark, you totally nailed it. I just finished writing the first batch of thank-yous to the incredibly generous people who have donated to the Esopus Foundation during our fundraising campaign. This is a somewhat unusual year to be asking for support as we are suspending publication of ESOPUS for the time being to focus on other publications and programming, so all of these donations mean even more.
