Or why your muscle may appear smaller after not training for a week or so. Exercising shouldn’t negatively affect your personal life and if you need to take some time off from the gym you’ll find out its not a big deal. . When comparing resistance training groups who took a 3 week break between training and those who continued with there resistance training. There was no difference in the two groups when compared in strength and muscle cross sectional area. This was further repeated in another study that compare CHO supplementation and whey protein in maintain lean mass over a two week break from resistance training. ⠀ The researchers found no significant difference between the two groups and both maintained their pre-detraining lean mass. As you can see taking up to 3 weeks doesn’t seem to make a difference in muscle size and strength. While it may feel like It, most of these effects are psychological thinking that you’re getting smaller and less strong. ⠀ One thing that does happen and may make your muscles appear smaller is with detraining (time off) the muscle glycogen stores begin to return to normal levels. This means that muscle fullness begins to decrease even if lean mass is preserved. Which may cause the muscle to look flat, since glycogen causes retention of water in the muscle with decrease of muscle glycogen the muscle will appear less full. But one’s training resumes this returns to normal. ⠀ One thing you can do while taking time off is making sure you’re eating adequate protein to help the preservation of lean mass.
