The beautiful and unique Noctilucent Clouds captured from the International Space Station (@ISS) 🛰 #PoSSUM . Noctilucent clouds are of significant interest within the aeronomy and climate #science communities as the clouds themselves are very sensitive indicators for what is going on in the atmosphere at higher altitudes. The extreme cold temperatures and very low density of the mesosphere creates an environment where very small changes in the atmosphere can drive large changes in observed noctilucent cloud properties. So by observing them, we can learn a lot about the atmosphere as a whole (e.g. dynamical and thermal state, solar-terrestrial influences). . Want to join the #PoSSUMAstronauts Family? Future #PoSSUMNaut of the day! . #repost @ninjaneergirl Really excited for my next chapter! I got accepted into Project PoSSUM! . . This is a citizen scientist astronaut candidate program full of incredibly passionate people. I'm going to take training to help become a citizen scientist with the goal of future suborbital spaceflight research. Training starts in September! While you're at it, definitely check out @project_possum and all their suborganizations. I'll be documenting my journey on my @aspacestory page and website! . . I can't believe I get to join the team! Trying to make everything work is going to take time, money, and patience. But I can't stop now!

Within the atmospheric layers, different gases absorb radiation at different wavelengths, whilst visible radiation, in addition to parts of the infrared penetrate the host layer completely. Most of the radiation between 310 nm and visible light makes it to ground level. At longer wavelengths, however, only portion of the radiation (i.e. infrared) gets through the atnosphere; the main constituents responsible of absorbing it are water vapor and carbon dioxide gases. Free electrons in the ionosphere are primarily responsible for reflecting the long radio waves. The chemical composition of the atmosphere is relatively uniform in terms of major elements; however, the concentration increases as it approaches sea level, because it's compressed by the overlying atmospheric layers. Most types of clouds are found in the troposphere, where the conditions shape the weather on land. Air is warmest at the bottom of the layer since it gets colder as it rises in altitude. The troposphere is mainly composed of nitrogen and oxygen gases, in addition to smaller amounts of water vapor, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, methane, and other relatively trace gases. The stratosphere is less dense than the troposphere; therefore, molecules in this layer are exposed to solar radiation with greater intensity. This causes the stable form of the molecules to be smaller in size and have a higher kinetic energy. The stratosphere is mainly composed of nitrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen oxides, in addition to the ozone gas that absorbs a considerable portion of the ultra violet radiation coming from the sun. The ions in the mesosphere are primarily responsible for the formation of the stratosphere. Being closer to the sun, these molecules are exposed to even more intense radiation, thus the molecules are ionized into positive ions and electrons. Due to the influence of solar radiation, temperatures begin to climb sharply in the lower thermosphere, ranging from about 200°C in the lower thermosphere to about 2000°C in the upper thermosphere.

A meteorologist dream... seeing Red Sprites in real life! Sharing this cool pic of one I that someone sent to me. Red Sprites are rare and occur high above the anvil tops of severe weather systems in the thermoshere and ionosphere, with their tendrils extending down into the mesosphere. After a long and hot day today, I took a run in the cool forest by home home. The sunset was really beautiful tonight. The start of the season for northern lights is only a few weeks away. But first, let us enjoy those beautiful summernights. These nlc are from last night, shot at lake Tysslingen where the fog was around me.

It is that time of the year again when we can observe Noctilucent clouds or night shining clouds in Sweden. This type of clouds can only be seen at night during the summer months when they are illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon, while the lower layers of the atmosphere are in Earth's shadow. The Noctilucent clouds are the highest clouds in Earth's atmosphere, located in the mesosphere at altitudes of around 76 to 85 km (47 to 53 mi). This phenomenon will be studied closely by the MATS (Mesospheric Airglow/Aerosol Tomography and Spectroscopy) satellite to be launched in December 2019. . . #astrophotography #tiuniverse #astronomy #Noctilucentclouds #nightshiningclouds #mesosphere #clouds #atmosphere #earth #nightsky #darkskies #universe #nightphotography #space #starrynight #nightimages #nightphotography #nightscape #universetoday #natgeospace #nightphotos #nightpics #gnesta #sweden
