FROM GEORGIA, FRANCE and GERMANY: Daughters of mujahideen in “Before Father Gets Back”, dir. Mari Gulbiani, 2019⠀ ⠀ An intimate portrait of two girls in a Georgian village who come of age and learn about the beauty of cinema, while their fathers are in Syria fighting for mujahideen groups⠀ ⠀ WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Two girls, Iman and Eva, are students in a village school in the Pankisi Gorge in Georgia, both from Muslim families. When the film-director arrives at their school to conduct cinema classes, the pair are taken by the magic of the screen and start making their own little movies. Eva and Iman’s fathers, like a growing part of men in the village, are away, fighting on the side of the mujahideen in Syria. Still, their presence and authority always loom over the girls as they reach maturity. As the documentary’s narrative intersperses with footage made by the girls, Iman and Eva both long for their fathers and dread the things their return will bring.⠀ ⠀ WHY YOU NEED TO WATCH: Dialogues about the need for art in education are omnipresent worldwide, and “Before Father Gets Back” makes a profound case in defense of art programs. For Eva and Iman, the cinema studies are an added dimension to the way they view life. When the time comes for the kids to make their own movie, an homage to Charlie Chaplin is produced, with Eva playing the Tramp, a bowler hat placed over her headscarf. That unexpected metamorphosis that puts the girl in gender, temporal and cultural drag shows how malleable personality is, and how hard it is to separate human behavior into artificial and organic. Through an interesting circle exchange of gazes between herself, the girls, and conventions of cinema, Gulbiani crafted an exquisite and tender portrait of adolescent femininity, with its universal simplicity and all the cultural peculiarities intact due to a respectful approach. “Before Father Gets Back” is a film of sheer power that captures two remarkable humans on the cusp of their maturity and leaves the viewer with a bittersweet longing for a place where talent could be reared without considerations of economic or ideological nature.⠀ ⠀ Read the full review on our website, LINK IN BIO.

It was my visit to Northern Nigeria that gave birth to my love and desire for exploring. Of course I've always had it but going to the north made the vision clearer. I climbed my first mountain in Adamawa State, the Gella mountain and seeing the view from the top filled my soul with excitement. I was completely swept off my feet for sure. Nature is beautiful indeed! . . . . . . . . . . . . #x

最後導演訪問那位用鈔票抹屁股的大叔 Londoño，為這齣Meta-mockumentary再添一層次： Carlos Mayolo (導演) : What would you say to those who make films? Luis Alfonso Londoño: Around here they say the cows that shit the best films are Americans, right? And they've been shitting for a while now, but not anymore. There are others who shit higher and better. We Colobians also have a talent for moving around in front of a movie camera. even if we lack culture. The Blood of a Poet, Jean Cocteau, 1930.
FUTURE CULT CLASSIC: 7.5/10 A slacker (Andrew Garfield) becomes smitten with his beautiful neighbour. When she abruptly moves out in the middle of the night, he suspects foul play, and in his investigation, uncovers a massive conspiracy. Under the Silver Lake is one heck of a dense film, with lots of layers that open up different interpretations of what the film is about and even what you are seeing onscreen. Even Garfield admitted he played the role of Sam differently in each take, based on his different theories about who his character is. This is film noir as defined by writer/director David Robert Mitchell and I suspect only he knows what the film really means. Nevertheless, despite its ambiguity, the film is admirable in its ideas and quite entertaining, despite a third act dip when the film goes on a bit too long. The film subverts your expectations of film noir; the score may evoke vibes of Hitchcock (it even features a giant tombstone bearing his name) and classic noirs of the 40s, but it’s paired with a plot that’s either surreal, tragic, or creepy depending on your interpretation of the story. One thing is for sure, Mitchell has crafted a satire of modern day LA. With tongue-in-cheek humour and moments of horror, the film highlights the absurdity of LA celebrity culture and artificiality, as well as the alienation and loneliness it can bring. #underthesilverlake #davidrobertmitchell #andrewgarfield #rileykeough #hitchcock #noir #cultfilm #movie #film #moviereview #filmreview #moviestowatch #movierecommendation #cinephile #mubi
FROM FRENCH GUIANA and FRANCE: Fabulous, dir. Audrey Jean-Baptiste, 2019⠀ ⠀ A transwoman who’s made strides in New York and Paris returns to her home country to teach voguing to the locals in a fascinating study of gender and sexuality in French Guiana⠀ ⠀ WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Lasseindra Ninja, a transwoman who has graced the ballroom scenes of the US, France, and Brazil, returns to her home country of French Guiana after a long absence. “Fabulous” follows Lasseindra as she teaches a workshop in voguing to the locals, and opens up about her life’s experiences. Meanwhile, as Lasseindra’s students get better at the evocative dance, they offer a window into the complex reality of living on the margins of sexuality and gender for the young French Guianese.⠀ ⠀ WHY YOU NEED TO WATCH: “Fabulous” obviously draws parallels to “Paris is Burning.” And just like the Jennie Livingston classic, it is an insightful exploration of a queer microcosm that reveals a lot about the heterosexual world at large, where particular aptitudes are neglected and made liminal. The most rewarding and heartening outcome of watching “Fabulous” is to see Lasseindra give back to the community by offering the younger generation of queer people a sense of kinship that had been a lifesaver for her in the darker, less inclusive times in New York City. By conducting the class and engaging with the student’s private lives, she becomes a matriarch of sorts, a fairy godmother for the country’s queer population. AsJean-Baptiste shows us in her charming, spirited, and indispensable film, things evolve, through perseverance, pain, and radical gender performance. “Fabulous” is a lot like voguing, the dance at its center: temperamental but life-affirming, fierce but tender, sassy and resilient, and full of magic that is evoked when the viewer watches young dancers polish their dancing chops. But it’s also a small collection of very personal stories, which address the same issue of defying isolation, and when the glitter is shaken off, what remains is the basic humanity.⠀ ⠀ Read the full review on our website, LINK IN BIO.
