I remember when #darfur was brought to international attention. I remember how heartbreaking it was to read about the refugees running from their homes with no idea where they would land. #theredpencil by @andrea.davis.pinkney is an important reminder of that time in history. It is also unintentionally timely. #refugeestories are so important, especially when you have been privileged enough not to need refuge. I wish I could share this story with everyone in my life and beyond, and I will be heavily book talking it this fall. #restorecommends #versenovel #middlegrade #historicalfiction #weneeddiversebooks #readstagram #bookstagram #bookaday #readeveryday

#refugees #refugeestories #migrantscontribute #photooftheday #picoftheday #pressphotography #photostory #photojournalism #familyphotojournalism #photodocumentary #documentarynow #documentarywork #documentaryphotography #reportagespotlight #onassignment #everydayecuador #everydaylatinamerica #everydayrefugees #everydaylafrontera

Day 190: Boots Made for Walking. Today we want to introduce you to one amazing member of the Alight family. His name is Wai Tun. Wai might be responsible for Thailand’s slogan – the Land of Smiles. Just look at that smile! It can brighten anyone’s day. Wai is a man on the move. To reach the patients he treats for tuberculosis and malaria on the Thai-Myanmar border, he travels across all types of environments, going wherever they are. Because of all the difficult terrain he encounters, the sandals he’s rocking just don’t always cut it. We had an idea, and a surprise for Wai…new rubber boots for him and his crew! “When I go to the field on a muddy road, this is very useful!” said Wai. “Especially in this area since we have so much high grass, this protects me from the snake bites. And when I cross the river, this saves my feet from sharp stones.”

REAL HUMANS OF CALAIS ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Whilst distributing clothes in Dunkirk, I got chatting to a Kurdish gentleman in his early thirties (not pictured) who had arrived two days prior. He was working in Operations after graduating with a degree in Business and Finance. His job meant he often worked closely with the government and by proxy, the American army. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ He used his drone to help the army and show them where ISIS were staying when one day, his drone was captured by members of ISIS. They posted his picture (taken from the footage from when he launched the drone) all over the state and it was suddenly too dangerous for him to stay. He fled the same day, leaving all his family behind. He left with no phone and has not been able to contact his family since he left his home country 10 months ago. They do not know if he is alive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “When ISIS came to my country, they came unarmed so you couldn’t tell who was ISIS a and who wasn’t. It wasn’t safe to talk to anyone. Supposing there was a family and one person in the family was ISIS, if that person was killed by the army and you had helped the army, his whole family might not have been members of ISIS but suddenly they will all want to kill you too. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ISIS wanted to kill me so I had to leave to survive. They didn’t want to kill my family, just me, so I left alone. One of my diplomas was in English Language; I want to go to England to work and lead a normal life. I loved my job in Kurdistan but I’ll be happy with any job I can get. I can speak the language so it will be easier to assimilate in England, I just have to get there.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I can’t imagine having to flee my country for doing something that was the right thing to do, and having to make the impossible journey across Europe, only be turned away and mistreated by the people I was running to for help! And to be able to smile and have such hope at the end of that? What resilience! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (shared with consent) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #refugeeswelcome #chooselove #refugeecrisis #nohumanisillegal #care4calais

On 7/7 #Idealist Day, Idealist Nancy Kelly and her friends in Fredericksburg, Virginia (USA), decided to support a project started by fellow Idealist Deborah Diaz of El Paso, Texas (USA). They collected coloring books and crayons in Virginia to send to Deborah in Texas for her "Colores for the Children" project. Deborah distributes art supplies to migrant children at the US-Mexico border. Nancy and Deborah first connected through the "Idealists of the World" facebook group. Both truly live the #Idealist values, and we are so excited to see what they will do next! "What is left once you suck the soul?" ------------------ All of them were 'pushed back' to Serbia and they found their way back to the abandoned communist-era factory. Some of them asked Muraad to join them for a game of cricket to cheer him up. Muraad reluctantly agreed. The batsman hit the ball quite a fair distance. Muraad, being the youngest, had to retrieve the ball. While he was searching for a ball, he heard a cry of an animal. He abandoned the search and walked towards the sound. He spotted two dogs ripping a baby deer apart. The image of the Hungarian Police dog struck him and he fell to the ground. He took a couple of deep breaths, picked himself up and threw stones at the dogs. He took slow steps towards the baby deer to not scare it. He patted her on the head and the neck. Once her breathing returned to normal, he picked her up and ran to the guys. The guys saw the bleeding and the fastest of them ran to the nearest medical store 10km away. Once they got the supplies, they cleaned her wounds and covered them. One of them told Muraad, "You found her, what do you want to call her?" ----------------- "Zoya. That's my sister's name." ----------------- They decided to keep her unless her mother comes looking for her. She would go on to live and grow with them. In a land, where they were treated like animals by fellow humans, they were treating an animal like a fellow human!

Day 189: When It Rains It Pours. We’re back at the Thai-Myanmar border! The rain in Thailand is for real. The combination of the long travel distances and the rainy season can make for extremely unpleasant conditions for the staff. Many travel by motorcycle, which makes the rain extremely uncomfortable. Our staff knew what they needed…rain coats! “I go to community sites and plantations and I will wear the rain coat,” said Myo Kyaw Kyaw, one of our Alight teammates. “It is good for the motorcycle to keep me dry.” Read the full story in our bio.

At least 128 pro-democracy protesters was allegedly killed by heavily armed paramilitary forces in the capital city of Sudan, Khartoum, in mid-July 2019. Political crisis, mass rapes and killings that began in Sudan last year push thousands of its citizens to flee their home country, including Mohammad Gooz. • • “I’m safe and not alone here, I’m along with my brothers, the Sudanese people,” Gooz says. As part of displaced community, he’s been living on the streets of Jakarta for a year, moving from one to another neighborhoods—unwanted, helpless but dependent to NGOs. He has no plan but waiting for UNCHR to give him permanent settlement. In 2014, the UN resettleent programme relocated 73,000 of the estimated 60 million people worldwide who were displaced from their homes. 24 of those people resettled in Iceland and waiting for them to arrive was Munro Moffat, who had just begun his year-long volunteering placment with the Red Cross. During that time, his job was to help those refugees resettle into Iceland 🇮 He spent his time helping the refugees turn their new houses into homes 🏠 as well as taking them on day trips to the countryside - giving them the opportunity to become more familiar with their new country. 📖 Read more about Munro's volunteering experience by clicking the link in our bio #volunteer #volunteering #volabroad #nonprofit #volunteerwork #volunteerlife #charity #socialimpact #socialchange #socialgood #makeadifference #makingadifference #bethechange #createchange #refugees #maketheworldabetterplace #travel #iceland #redcross #europeansolidaritycorps #eusolidaritycorps #youthwork #withrefugees #refugeestories #refugeesupport

I

I am happily back in Denver, home-bound, after weeks of travel. ⁣ ⁣ I wrote a blog post about some of the ways how being on the road enriched my life with God. You can read the whole post on my website (link in bio), and here are some sweet photos from the "thin places" where God felt especially near to me. ⁣ ⁣ 1. Lakeuden Risti Church in Seinäjoki, Finland. The church was designed by a world famous Finnish designer and architect Alvar Aalto. I loved the simple, beautiful form of the church and being a Finland native, it had a special significance to me to get to share this sacred space with my (non-Finnish) husband. . 2. Izmir-Lesvos tent installation with 15 refugees' stories by Anne Uusitalo in Amsterdam at Look Up store. The stories and self-portraits of the young refugees', and the tent sewn together from life-jackets was impactful and much needed place of prayer for mercy and help. @lookup.amsterdam ⁣ . 3. We loved to worship with Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) and hear Nicki and Pippa Gumbel's unceasing passion to see people meet Jesus for the first time. There were also several people sharing about their first weeks life with Jesus. There is probably nothing in the world that can encourage me more than that. @alphacourse @htbchurch . ⁣ 4. Ah, the beach! I have always felt a special spaciousness and sacredness by the sea, but now being land-locked, Colorado-dweller, hearing and smelling the sea felt especially sweet. ⁣ 5. I had dozens of cups of tea with people who I have cried and laughed with in the middle of God’s mysterious ways. How I treasure the gift of friendships and the stories & lives shared together. . . ⁣ 6. Last but not least, I got to worship with so many dear ones from Vineyard Amsterdam, the church that I served and helped to plant. @vineyardamsterdam . ⁣ . What places, experiences or activities have drawn you to God in special ways on your travels? What places refresh your soul like no other can? ⁣ ⁣ #findinggod⁣ #giftoffriendship #sacredspaces⁣ #thinplaces⁣ #prayerplaces⁣⁣ #lakeudenristi #prayforrefugees #refugeestories #artthatmatters #anneuusitalo #htb #tryalpha #vineyardamsterdam#alvaraalto

When the Iranian

The pain never goes away; an Iranian refugee’s story When the Iranian revolution happened in 1979 and the dictatorship of the Shah ended, Zohreh and many millions like her were full of hope – they yearned for freedom, liberty and equal rights for women and men. It was not to be. Instead Zohreh endured years in jail, was lashed and tortured and saw her family and friends killed by the Revolutionary Guard of the Islamic Republic under the rule of Ayatollah Khomeini. Now, 30 years after fleeing Iran and gaining asylum in Britain, the memory of those times is still very vivid. “Every night I dream about the prison, I can’t sleep well because the past hasn’t finished, because it continues. Every time I hear of someone being arrested it takes me back to the corridors of the prison, to those cells.” To continue reading, link in bio. #iran #humanrights #womensrights #refugees #refugeestories #islamicrepublicofiran #yemen #shah #ayatollahkhomeini #torture #bbc @bbcnews #kierancooke #ILA @humanrightswatch @amnesty
