As we know stars don't move on the sky, not even during the lifetime of a person - we can even use the 400 year old Bayer catalogue, or even the 2200 year old Hipparchus star catalogue. However, stars don't orbit in a perfectly synchronized way around the galaxy core. The random element in the Sun's and other stars' velocity causes an extremely small apparent movement, which is called "proper motion". In order to detect such a small movement we usually need a specific equipment (a space telescope can be especially handy), but for this insignificant 9 magnitude star, the proper motion is easily visible even with my 400mm telephoto lens. The annual movement is still as small as seeing a coin from 1 km away. The fun part just starts here. Since the Earth orbits around the Sun, we see the stars from a bit different viewpoint during the year. This causes a (n even smaller) movement, which is called "parallax", and it can be used (since we know the size the Earth's orbit) to calculate the distance of stars. What you can actually see here is the net result of the proper motion and parallax. 30 images were taken each time with my 7d II and 400mm lens. In order to calculate the individual proper motion and parallax elements, I derived a formula using the least squares method which fits a trajectory onto the measured points, and implemented it in Python. So, the end result is (in parentheses are the Gaia measurements): Proper motion Dec [mas] : 10340.39 (10362.565) Proper motion RA [mas] : -868.82 (-802.805) Parallax [mas] : 578.39 (547.4506) Distance [parsec] : 1.72 (1.826) Distance [lightyears] : 5.64 (5.958) The error in parallax is 0.014 pixel.
