05 April 1984 - The Coffee Achievers - I wasn’t there early enough to know whether roses were being passed out to all of New York’s Nightclub High Society; but evidently Susanne Bartsch was holding one in her leather gloved right hand while a seemingly uninterested Steve Rubell was sniffing one with his left hand. I wonder if it was spiked. #iconic • • • • • • • • #clubkids • • • • • #gay #gaylife #chronicles #fromthearchive #personalphotography #autobiography #storyteller #shotonfilm #nychistory #kodaktrix #nyhistory #80sfashion #80sstyle #style #fashion #nightclublife #nightclubbing #80shairstyle #danceterianyc #diannebrill @diannebrill @bartschland #steverubell of #studio54 #highsociety

I started this week with an iconic poster of Farrah Fawcett wearing a red @normakamali bathing suit. I'm not sure what the larger draw was, the body-hugging bathing suit or Farrah’s hair, teeth, and overall gorgeousness ‼️ Regardless, I’ve paid tribute to @normakamali fashion all week. I couldn’t finish without a mention of her “iconic” sleeping bag coat. The coat was imagined by @normakamali in 1973 while on a camping trip. She thought that if her sleeping bag had sleeves, it would be the warmest coat ever, and so the sleeping bag coat was born and gained popularity immediately. From 1976-1980 #studio54 was the destination for the beautiful, famous, and rich. #steverubell and all of the doormen wore the coat to keep warm while deciding who’d get through the velvet ropes. It gained tremendous popularity during the 54 era. A resurgence happened once again after 9/11. The store was inundated with phone calls from people wanting the coat. So many were displaced and homeless they felt as if the coat was a makeshift bed, home, and safe space that they could wrap themselves in while sitting in a lobby or on an airport floor. The coat had a cocoon effect . The sleeping bag coat in modern-day continues to be popular and in demand and is worn by men and women all over the world. Thank you @normakamali for being the OG influencer before it was even a thing, a visionary, a leader, a great supporter of women and women’s rights, and for your devotedness to style and wellness. @tommygenesis @badgalriri @kendalljenner @normakamali @xtina @beyonce @gwenstefani @andreltalley #fashion #influencer #designer #design #fashiondesigner #thebestthingsyoushouldhave💗🖤

Palladium (1985) Arata Isozaki,126 East 14th Street, New York. Built within the ornate shell of Thomas W. Lamb's 1927 Academy of Music (a movie palace of faded grandeur) and rechristened 'Palladium', this nightclub by former Studio 54 owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager opened its doors in May of 1985. This was Isozaki's first American design to reach completion, and it was widely considered to be one of the most remarkable pieces of interior architecture in New York. In his Times review, Paul Goldberger wrote "It is rare that a celebrated architect designs a discotheque at all, let alone decides to let this kind of project serve as his debut in a country in which he is beginning to achieve a major reputation." Isozaki conceived of the interior as a hard and vibrant independent structure arranged inside the ornate and crumbling shell. In addition to enlisting a consortium of artists to participate in the renovation - there were significant murals and installations by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, Kenny Scharf and Keith Haring - Isozaki collaborated with French interior designer Andree Putman on numerous details, including the color palette. Rubell and Schrager hired Danceteria DJ Richard Sweret, DJ Patrick Anastasi and DJ Luis Martinez, all of whom saw the possibility of a much larger audience for a downtown ‘new wave’, Euro and house music-oriented club. Palladium was a mainstay on the New York club scene until it was bought out in August of 1997 by New York University and demolished for a campus housing project.
