Amadeus. Book by Peter Shaffer. Directed by Gina Lee. Gwanglim Art Centre, Seoul, Korea. 27 February 2018 ~ 29 April 2018. _ _ Director Gina Lee, who has been focusing on the theme of the theatre and homoeroticism, has staged Peter Shaffer’s well-known play, Amadeus in Seoul, Korea (2018). In this version of Amadeus, she seems to integrate Shaffer’s Amadeus into her interest in theatre and homoeroticism. Here, she meticulously traces the dynamics between Mozart and Salieri in the view of portraying Salieri’s desire of Mozart as a cathexis, playing with the in-betweenness of the protagonist and antagonist on the stage. By staging the dramatic actions focused on two main characters and focalising the actions through the narrator Salieri’s perspective, director Lee complexes the foil relationship between Mozart and Salieri. She not only contrasts Mozart in the absolute white and Salieri in the absolute black but also blurs the boundary between the victimised and the inflictor, playing with the in-betweenness of the protagonist and the antagonist on the stage. _ _ However, it is questionable whether BBCH Hall fits her Amadeus. It may well suit when she displays her talent of composing felicitous mise-en-scene. She stages the scene extravaganza with an effective use of ensemble, representing the levelation and dynamics among the characters. This use of spacious extravaganza works as a shortcoming when it comes to intensive interactions among the characters, failing to elucidate the bare margin of space on the stage, which does not support the dramatic action of the characters. This also goes with Director Lee’s style of composing mise-en-scene. Her mise-en-scene compositions have been worked beautifully as each concluded scenes. It is effective and powerful as she demonstrated in her musical Seopyeonje, which reminded of the sophisticated piece of ink painting, or Kingdom of Winds, which was acclaimed to compose of the energetic mise-en-scene with the power of ensemble on the minimalistic bare stage. It seems that her strength does not create a huge synergy with Shaffer’s Amadeus, losing a trace of a tightly interconnected text.

Also worth mentioning is this review of the Filipino renditi

"RED" 3/3 Also worth mentioning is this review of the Filipino rendition of "Red". Excerpt: "In a country where pomp and pageantry, grand production design and choreography – not to mention noise and music and everything in between – is what’s deemed as entertainment, there is nothing in “Red” that will interest the every-Pinoy viewer. But it has everything we should see about local Pinoy talent, it is everything that writing about creativity should be. “Red” by John Logan is a two-character no-intermission play about artist Mark Rothko and fictional assistant Ken. “Red” is fantastic material because it resonates in third world Philippines, given the travesties of art and culture, creativity and artmaking, in this context. Yes, “Red” got those bad reviews in the US. No, they couldn’t even begin to imagine an audience such as Manila. Which is not to say we are less of an audience, as it is this: what this play dares do is not something we like doing, or would enjoy seeing on any stage. This version ofyabang in Rothko, and this naïve Ken, those exist too often in this country. Artists on high horses and bright-eyed young artists are familiar to us. They will keep you awed by “Red.” Elsewhere in the world, that story might have already been done better, if not countless times; in the Philippines, it is something we don’t quite talk about. So it seems that 1958 America is actually 2013 Philippines. Such is this play’s appeal. Such is its truth. Elsewhere, this play was faulted for having become a coming-of-age story of sorts for this younger character. And yet it would seem to be the perfect ending for this Pinoy audience, where we have yet to learn to stand up to our patrons and mentors, official and unofficial; where it needs to reach the point of crisis before we have the balls to even untangle ourselves from the clutches and claws of our cultural mothers and fathers. We forget that red also stands for rebellion. And in this country, “Red” is certainly what we need (to see) still. —Katrina Stuart Santiago, GMA News Photo credits: The Necessary Theater @redtheplay

Red flares in the diatribe that fills the studio. Red pulsat

"RED" 1/3 Red flares in the diatribe that fills the studio. Red pulsates in Ken’s veins, because despite Rothko’s criticisms of the artworld, his vision tells him that he doesn’t have to look at all of the art world as a cynic. All along, Rothko’s gravitas is matched only by the towering red mural, his creation. The disturbed master artist claims he does not even know what red means... Sonyeo-ga (A Song of a Girl). Book by Jaram Lee. Directed by Jaram Lee. Jayu Theatre, Seoul Art Centre, Seoul, Korea. 28 February 2018 ~ 4 March 2018. National Changguek Company of Korea inaugurated its newly-launched project “Different Angle on Changgeuk” with a premiere of Jaram Lee’s Sonyeo-ga. This intriguing project indeed seems to present a different angle, examining the line-up of the creators: Jaram Lee and Taehyeong Kim, the rising directors of Korea. Considering that Changgeuk is often perceived to be an art of the tradition (which often resuscitates the already-told stories of the past e.g. Shimcheong-ga, Jeokbyeok-ga and many others), National Changgeuk Company’s attempt to engage with young rising directors seems to be an attempt of imbuing the ideas from their young generation. Jaram Lee’s Sonyeo-ga represents itself as an exemplary case of this attempt, seeing and singing (ga) Changgeuk from a girl’s (sonyeo)’s perspective by women artists. This collaborative work of three women artists (Director and playwright Jaram Lee, Dramaturgy Jihye Park and actor Soyeon Lee) opens up a new theme in Changgeuk from their own perspective, telling the fable of a girl from girls’ experience and perspective. This fresh attempt of changgeuk dashes with bare legs toward another possible future of Korean Changgeuk, which is the reason why this project “Different Angle of Changgeuk” leaves an expectancy of the next trip to another future of changgeuk that will be introduced with different perspectives of other rising artists.

I raved about my first time seeing @moulinrougebway in Boston and the Broadway incarnation was even better. It is still fun, loud, romantic, kitschy and fabulous & I’m still obsessed. Not only with @aarontveit (which is a justified obsession) but with the whole show. I need this cast recording in my life very soon! The small things I saw in Boston were mostly actually fixed for broadway (doesn’t always happen). This is a must see - run to see it and experience the truth, beauty, freedom and love. This was deep. Deep in the I just saw something amazing but might need to go be depressed for a awhile in my room or see some really light comedy to get my head back together deep. It's sad and its gut-wrenching but the performances - man those were awesome. Also will anybody ever complain of seeing Jake Gyllenhall absolutely kill it for 45 minutes straight? Beetlejuice on Broadway left me feeling disappointed by two things. The first is that the show has a “Magic and Illusion Designer” whose entire job is dedicated to creating optical effects, separate from the “Special Effects Designer” who also works towards that end. And yet, the musical’s effects weren’t all that remarkable. With a show like this, premised on the unreal and imaginative, there was so much potential for a stunning visual spectacle and instead it fell short. My second disappointment relates to the songs. In my opinion, the mark of a good musical is when you leave the theater humming the songs to yourself. And the mark of a great musical is when you go home and want to listen to the music again and again. With Beetlejuice, I left the theater not being able to hum a single melody from the show. The music went in one ear and out the next, so mundane that it barely registered. The only song that did stand out is the Banana Boat Song (Day O), but that is a traditional Jamaican folk song that wasn’t written for the musical. “This @nctheatre production, directed by Eric Woodall, boasts a talented ensemble of Broadway veterans and locals, including 12 North Carolina Theatre Conservatory students. Tony Award-winner Karen Ziemba channels her inner (comedic) queen of mean ever effectively as the show’s antagonist Miss Hannigan. Direct from the Broadway production of The Book of Morman, John Eric Parker commands the stage vocally as a magnetic Oliver Warbucks. And the exuberance of the orphan ensemble, particularly a scene-stealing Emily Jewel Hoder as Molly, is smile-worthy.” Read what else Lauren Van Hemert has to say about the NCT production of ANNIE, which runs through Sunday @decraleigh (link to review in bio). . . . #anniemusical #broadwaymusical #tonyawardwinner #thesunwillcomeouttomorrow #northcarolinatheatre #nct #downtownraleigh #raleighnc #theaterreview #rdu #onstage #rduonstage
